William was born on 31st Aug 1844 and christened on 27th Sep 1844 at St Phillips Birmingham, to William Holmes and Caroline (née Whateley).
In 1861 he was a brush maker, like his father, living at 4 Ivory Place, St Thomas, Birmingham,
He married in June quarter 1842 in Aston district, Warwickshire to Maria Whyley, daughter of Thomas Whyley and Elizabeth.
In 1871 they are living at 21 York Place, Worcester, William still working as a brushmaker, and in 1881 in 13 St Swithin’s Street, Worcester St Swithin, Worcestershire. By 1895 he has moved to Penarth, near Cardiff, Glamorgan. He started a Fruiterer’s business at 7 Glebe Street, Penarth see below. In 1897 the business is at 10 Glebe Street (this could be a renumbering), However William is not living there. In 1901 he, and the family are living at 2 St Augustine Place, Penarth, and William died on 22nd June1907 in Penarth. Maria is still running the business in 1914 at 7 Glebe Street.

1 William Whyley Holmes was born in October quarter 1868 in Worcester district, and christened on 30th November 1868 at St George, Claines. He died in October quarter 1868 in Worcester district, and was buried on 23rd December 1868 also at St George Claines.
2 Edith Maria Holmes was born on 16th December 1869 in Worcester and was christened on 30th June 1870 at All Saints Worcester. She married Joseph Coles in December 1891 in Cardiff district. They lived in Roath, Cardiff in 1901 with 4 children, Wilfred Herbert, born in Cardiff December 1892, Edith Irene born December 1893, Richard Leslie born June 1896, and Vivian Baden, born September 1900. Joseph died in January quarter 1929 in Cardiff district.
3 Florence Elizabeth Holmes was born in October quarter 1871 in Worcester district, and was christened on 30th December 1871 at All Saints Worcester.
4 Frederick William Holmes (known as William) was born in April quarter 1873 in Worcester district, christened 29th Jun 1873 at All Saints, Worcester.
5 Mayfred Holmes was born June 1877 in Worcester. She married Thomas Hale Fletcher in December 1908, and had at least one son Arthur Holmes Fletcher, born Sept 1911 in Cardiff dist. Mayfred died in January quarter 1968 in East Glamorgan district. Thomas Hale Fletcher died on 23rd September 1923 in Queanbeyan, NSW, Australia, and probate was granted to Mayfred and an Ann Fletcher. Arthur was working for Messrs J B Young's Ltd as head of the grocer department. It is not clear if Mayfred and or Arthur joined him in Australia.
6 Amy Louise Holmes was born December 1880 in Worcester. She died 17th January 1959 in Penarth,.
7 Arthur Whyley Whateley Holmes was born in March quarter 1888 in Penarth. He married 1) Ann D L Harris in September 1920 in Cardiff district. They had two children, William B Holmes and Arthur Malcolm Holmes 2) Dorothy J M Spooner in March quarter 1939 in Lancaster district. Arthur died on 6th April 1964 in Glamorgan.
