William Bishop and Jane Tomkins - my great great great grandparents

William Bishop was born in 1814 in Stanford Bishop, Herefordshire, and baptised at Stanford Bishop on 19th August 1814. He was son of William Bishop, a labourer and Hannah née Hancocks. Jane Tomkins was born in about 1818 in Grendon Bishop, Herefordshire, her baptism has not been found. She was daughter of Thomas Tomkins, a carpenter, and Mary nee Bird.

William and Jane married on 6th April 1815 at Wacton, Herefordshire. Their first child, Mary Ann was born in Herefordshire, but between 1837 and 1839 they moved to the Broadheath/Hallow area of Worcestershire. William was an agricultural and general labourer. He died in April quarter 1888 in Martley district, and Jane died in January quarter 1893 also in Martley district.

William and Jane had the following 5 children: -

Mary Ann Bishop, my great great grandmother, was born in 1837 in Stanford Bishop, Herefordshire, and baptised at St James, Stanford Bishop on 2nd April 1837. Though her family had moved to Worcestershire, for some reason she continued to live in Herefordshire. In 1841, she was living with her grandparents, Thomas and Mary Tomkins, and again in 1851, though she seems to be called Margery on this Census. Clearly she met her match in Herefordshire, and married Benjamin Pullen on 12th October 1856 at St Mary the Virgin, Bishops Frome, Herefordshire. After the birth of there first son, William Henry Pullen, they joined her parents in the Broadheath area of Worcestershire. See here for more.

Hannah Bishop was born in September quarter 1840 in Hallow, Worcestershire. She was a glover and dressmaker. She married Alexander Frederick Griffin, who had many trades, on 12th Feb 1865 in St Andrew Droitwich, Worcestershire. They had one daughter, Alexandra Amandra Griffin, a musician, who is described here. Alexandra was born in June quarter 1865 and died in June quarter 1904, both in Worcester. She was a musician and music teacher.

Thomas Bishop was born in December quarter 1843 in Hallow, Worcestershire. He was a bricklayer. He married Eliza Taylor in December quarter 1862. Two children were born in Hallow in 1862 and 1864. Eliza must have died but I cannot find it. Thomas moved to Staffordshire taking his older son William, but leaving his younger son, Thomas Edward. Thomas senior remarried a Sarah E, but I haven’t been able to positively identify her or the marriage. Thomas and Sarah had three more children in Rowley Regis. Thomas Edward Bishop joined the army in 1881 and saw service in Bangalore and Quetta before becoming a gym instructor. See here. He married Annie Rowe in June quarter 1889 in the Isle of Wight and they had two children there, ,oved to barracks at Dover, where two more were born, and left the Army in 1902, where one final child was born near Egham

Harriett Bishop  was born in June quarter 1845 in Hallow, Worcestershire. She married Herbert Taylor in June quarter 1862 in Martley district - she must have been only 17. He was a bricklayer, and they had 5 children. Herbert died in June quarter 1878 in Martley district, though Harriett had another son, Willie Taylor in about 1885, and then she remarried James Coleman between 1891 and 1901, though I have been unable to find a marriage for her. I lose both James and Harriet after 1901

Henry Bishop was born in July quarter 1847 in Hallow, he became a carpenter, but died in July quarter 1874 in Martley district.
