George William Edwards & Caroline Emma Holmes' children and their families

Edwin Albert Edwards Ted’

Ted was born on 4th Mar 1887 in Worcester. In 1901 he was working as a tin tester in Worcester. He married Alice Elizabeth Kench, daughter of Alfred Thomas Kench in 27th May 1907 at the Baptist Chapel, Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire. He is a railway engine stoker at this time. Ted emigrated to Canada on 16.4.1909, leaving Liverpool on the Victorian on 16th April 1909, arriving Halifax, Nova Scotia on 23.4.09 and St John’s New Brunswick after. Alice and Albert were booked onto this, but seemed to have a change of mind, they followed on, leaving Liverpool 17th December 1909 on the Corsican, arriving St John’s NB on Christmas Day 1909. Both gave their destination as Ninette, presumably initially staying with George W Edwards and Rose. They had four children: -

Albert Edwin Edwards, born March quarter 1908 in Stratford district, died in 30th July1986 in Comox, BC, Canada.

Albert was in the Army in Alberta in 1943, and living in Courtenay, B.C. in 1977.

Florence Caroline Bessie Edwards, born November 1910 in Manitoba, in 1957 she was still living with her father at St George’s Road, Winnipeg. She moved to Courtenay, probably in 1977 at a similar time to Olive, and she is in care in Cumberland BC from at least 1987 until her death on 16th September.1989.

Olive May Edwards, born 8th Jan 1912, in Winnipeg, Canada, died unmarried 18th Jun 1983 in Comox, British Columbia. She moved to the Comox Valley in 1977 from Winnipeg.

Ernest F Edwards, born 8th Jan 1912, twin to Olive, in Winnipeg, Canada. Ernest was in the RAF during the Second World war. Ernest died on 19.12.1959 in Vancouver. He married Theresa Marie Durkin (Tess) on 17th May 1947 at St Edward’s Winnipeg. Theresa died on 24th February 1985 in Vancouver. No children are known of. Both were buried in Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, BC, though surprisingly not together.

At the 1911 Census, the family is in an apartment on Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg. Ted was a Motorman (driver) for the Winnipeg Electric Railway. In 1919-1920 and 1922 he remained a motorman, living at 142 Langevin St., and in 1935 and 1936 he was still a Motorman living at 15 St George’s Road, St Vital, once a separate town, but now a suburb of Winnipeg,. He was still at this address in 1957.

Ted died on 27th Oct 1974 at his home in Winnipeg. Alice Elizabeth had died earlier on 2nd July 1953 at St Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg. I met Ted in the 1960’s at the house of my grandmother Ada Douglas (née Pullen), they were cousins.

There is a possibility Ted had another Son. Family members recall death in WW2, possibly as a RAF pilot. Investigations have drawn a blank, and Canadian family are not aware of this.

I met Ted in the 1960’s at my grandmother’s house. He was very warm and gave me a Canadian silver dollar. This was given to my parents for safekeeping, but its whereabouts are unknown! See the photos below.
