Joseph Holmes

Joseph was born about October quarter 1856 to William and Caroline née Whateley. He was christened on 3rd Nov 1856 at Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwick Avenue.

He was an errand boy at 14 years of age, when his father died, he was looked after by elder sister Susannah.

He married Catherine Alice Allen of Cork, Ireland daughter of Abraham Allen, a brushmaker of Cork, & Barbara Keane in 1876 in Cork, Ireland. Catherine was born also in Cork, Ireland in about 1854.

By 1881 he was working as a brushmaker in Bolton, though his wife and first two children are not present, perhaps in Ireland. He was probably in Swansea at some time, as his second daughter Rosaline was born there. Also note that Abraham Allen was a brushmaker, suggesting that Joseph worked perhaps as a brushmaker in Ireland for a while.
