The Will of John Morewood of Bradfield Yorkshire 1647

 

 

 In the Name of God Amen The seventh day of October

in the yeare of our Lord i647 I John Morewood of the Okes in the Chapellry of Bradfeild and

County of Yorke gent being sickly of body but of good remembrance praised be God therefore

doe ordayne and make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following

hereby revoking and making void all former wills and testaments whatsoever by mee made Impri-

mis I commend my soule to God in the obedience and satisfaction of Christ Jesus my Lone Saviour

And I will that my bodie shall be buried in the Chancell or Quire of the Church or the Chapell of

Bradfeild aforesayd And I do nominate ordayne and make Gilbert Morewood my brother Rowland

Morewood my eldest sonne and heyre Andrew Morewood my Sonne and John Marriott the elder of

Oghill yeoman Executors of this my last will and Testament which sayd executors my will and mynde

is shall from and after my decease ta?thes hereafter expressed and only upon trust and confi-

dence to be disposed so in this my last will is appointed receave have take sue for and recouer all and

every summe summes of money due to me or to any of my children hereafter named upon any bills

bonds specialties and securities made to me or any of my children or without specialties And

for the better enabling my sayd executors in that behalfe and upon the trust aforesayd I doe hereby

devise give and bequeath to my sayd executors all my goods chattels and chattells moveable and

unmoveable Alsoe my further will and mynde is that my sayd executors the survivor or survivors

of them with the money to be receaved of and for such thinges as I have given to them upon trust

and confidence shall pay or cause to be paid all such debts as I owe to any person or persons And

shall discharge my funeralls Mortuarie and all things hereunto belonging and further shall

paye and discharge all legacies and bequests hereafter by me devised given or bequested to any

person or persons And first I doe hereby give and bequeath the summe of Ten pounds of

lawfull money to be bestowed towards releefe of the poore of the Chapellrie of Bradfeild to

be distributed at the discretion of my sayd executors within one yeare next following my decease

And I doe hereby further ratifie and confirm the deede by mee formerly sealed delivered

and lawfully executed of all the Messuages Tenemts Lands grounds and hereditaments with

thappurtences situate lying and being in Brough Thornehill and Hill in the County of Derby

heretofore granted to me and to my heyres for ever by Gilbert Morewood and Andrew More-

wood my brothers and by William Fox my sonne in Lawe three of the executors of Rowland

Morewood my late brother deceased (whose right the sayd premises were to witt the revercon

of all the sayd last specified premisses after my decease unto Francis Morewood Gilbert

Morewood Benjamin Morewood and Joseph Morewood fower of my younger sonnes and to

their heyres and Assignes for ever as part of the Childs parts and porcons of my sayd

fower younger sonnes forth of my personall estate as in the sayd deede is alsoe mentioned

And my will and mynde further is for the fower younger sonnes forth of my sayd personall estate

that whereas there was disbursed by me for the purchase of the sayd last mentioned pr[e]misses

the summe of sixteene hundreth pounds that the sayd rate and price computed and rateably

allowed foronde the Childsytes and persons of my sayd fower younger sonnes to witt the

summe of fower hundreth pounds to each of them my sayd trusted Executors shall paye

to each of my sayd fower younger sonnes as he or they shall attayne their severall and respective

ages of twenty five yeares soe much moneys more forth of my personall estate as shall

make up the sayd fower hundred pounds rated in the price of the remitted to every of

my sayd fower younger sonnes And the Cleere Rents and profitts of the sayd  pr[e]misses

withe meanes space becoming due to each of my sayd fower younger sonnes (upon a just Ac-

compte by each of them to be given to my sayd Executors of all disbursements and charges

to the sayd fower younger sonnes) the summe of seaven hundred pounds to every of the sayd fower

younger sonnes in full satisfaction and discharge of every their Childsyte and porcon forth

of my personal estate and my will is that my sayd trusted Executors shall pay and satisfie

to the sayd Francis Morewood my son one hundred pounds beong a legacie to him bequeathed

by Mr Rowland Morewood my late deceased brother And I doe hereby further devise give

and bequeath unto my sonne Antony Morewood five hundred pounds in full satisfaction & discharge

of his filiall childsyte and porton And unto my sonne Andrew Morewood three hundred

pounds more in full satisfaction and discharge of his filiall childsyte and porton And my

will and mynde alsoe is and I doe hereby give and bequeath to Susan Morewood Mary More-

wood Sara Morewood and Priscilla Morewood my daughters yet unpreferred in marriage

to every of them five hundred pounds to witt soe much money to every of them as will make

the bills and bonds and respectively taken in every of their names allready the

sayd summes of five hundred pounds a peece for and in full satisfaction of their and every

of their childsparts and portons And my will alsoe is that my sayd Executors shall pay to the

sayd Susan Morewood my daughter the summe of one hundred pounds being a legacie to her

bequeathed by the last will and testament of the sayd Mr Rowland Morewood my late

deceased brother And I doe further give and bequeath to John Morewood sonne of Rowland

Morewood my eldest sonne and heyre fortie shillings and unto Anne Foxe my daughter twenty

Shillings in full satisfaction and discharge of her Childsparte and porcon And twelve pounds more

To her be by her bestowed upon her now sixe children And I give unto Grace Pickforth my

daughter wife of James Pickforth twenty shillings in full satisfaction and discharge of her

childshate and porcon and forty pounds nire by her to be bestowed upon her now five children

And to Elizabeth Stopford my daughter wife of James Stopford Tenn pounds in full satisfaction

and discharge of her childsate and porcon And I doe hereby make constitute and appoint my

forenamed executors and the survivors of them to be guardians and Tutors unto my sayd

children yet being in their minorities during the residue if their severall and respective

minorities And my will and mynde us that sayd Executors and the survivor and

survivors of them shall dispose and imploye the severall porcons of my sayd children

during their respective minorities to the best profitt if my sayd children during their

respective minorities And my will and mynde is that the persons of my sayd daughters

shall be payd to them respectively as each of them shall accomplish their severall ages of one

and twenty yeares or at the dayes of their severall and respective marriages whether shall first

happen if every and each the sayd daughters respectively shall marrie by the advice and

consente of the sayd executors or the survivor or survivors of them And it is my will and

mynde that in case sayd executors shall perceive that the disbursements of my moneys for

or on the behalfe of my sayd fower younger sonnes or any of them may conduce for the good?

Of any of my sayd sonnes in their tradeinge or other wise that upon such moneys as my sayd Exe-

cutors shall soe disburse for any my sayd younger sonnes shall be allowed to my sayd executors

in the makeing up of the sayd seaven hundred pounds to each of them as aforesayd when they

or any of them respectively shall attayne the age of twenty five yeares And my will is that

twenty pounds be paid firth of my personall estate unto Rowland Morewood my eldest sonne

and heyre being left as a legacie in my hands by Rowland Morewood my late deceased father

and that they of iff thereof to will fower nobles yearly might be paied to the use of the poore

people of the chapellrie of Bradfeild with sayd fower Nobles I have heretofore carefully

paid and discharged accordingly And my will is that my sayd sonne and heyre shall miyleye

the sayd twenty pounds and pay the sayd profitts thereof yearly as abovesayd and as is ly-

mitted by the last will and testament of my sayd deceased father And I doe further give and

bequeath to Gylbt Morewood and Andrew Morewood my brothers be either of them tenn pounds

And to every of their children twenty shillings in Gold for the buying of a gold ring for every

of them And unto Andrew Morewood my sonne one of my sayd executors Tenn pounds as a

legacie And unto John Mariott an other of my sayd Executors twenty shillings and to my

Cosen Antony Morewood of Offerton five pounds and to my Cosen the wife of Godfrey Fogatt

three pounds sixe shillings eight pence and to my Cosen the wife of John Parker three pounds

sixe shillings eight pence And to John Bullock sonne of John Bullock my brother in lawe

twenty shillings And Unto my Cozens Reynald Eyre and Elizabeth Eyre to either of them tenn

shillings and unto my Uncle Andrew Morewood twentie shillings if he survive mee And

three shillings and fower pence to every servant who shall abide with me at the time of my death

And it is my full will and mynde that if any of my sayd sonnes or daughters shall dye unmarried

and having not received his her or their porcon or porcons that then the porcon or porcons of such

sonne or daughter soe dyeing shall be devided equally amt the rest of my children then alive

and which were not married And further I give unto my sayd eldest sonne and heyre as a

free gift the summe of one hundred pounds in confidence reposed in him that he will deale soe

kindly and respectively wit my children after my decease And all my Husbandrie geare of

wood and from the square table in the Hall two longe formes in the Parlour one great Chayre the

greatest meate Arke One steep fatt and my gunne and it is my full will and mynde that w[ha]tsoever

ambiguity doubt or question shall in any sorte arise touching any Clause or sentence in this my

sayd last will and testament that the same be decided and determined by my sayd executors or

the greatest parte of them or their survivors and the same to be taken to be my true meaning

in that behalfe in witnesse whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seale the day and yeare first

above written Memorandum That the words Tenn pounds in the second sheete were interhy noe

before the sealing and was afterwards published and subscribed in the presence of Iohn Morewood

Ricko Brodeley John Heyfurst Wm Mokson

Testamento pred[ic]to nominet Quibus Comissa fuit Administraco omnia et singuloru[m] bonoru[m] Juria

Et Creditora dicti defunti de bene et fidel[iete]r Administrando eadem ad s[anc]ta dei Evangelia vigore Com-

missionis in ea p[ar]ta emanat inrat Refereata potestate Gilberto Morewood et Johanni Mar-

riott ceteris ex executoribus in eodem Testamento nominat cum venerint sen eoru[m] alter venerit

eandem petitur? in debita Juris admissum

 

Probate of the above written will was at London before our beloved Lord Brent Knight Doctor of Laws

master of the Prerogative Court legitimately constituted the eleventh day the Month of May in the year of our Lord

sixteen hundred and forty eight  Roland Morewood and Andrew Morewood sons and two of the executors

named in the Will to whom administration was granted of  all and singular goods rights

and credits of the said deceased, to well and faithfully administer, emanated that power Gilbert Morewood and John

Marriott others of the executors named in the same will  came to the same and prayed to be admitted to the debts and rights.
