George William Edwards & Caroline Emma Holmes' children and their families
Caroline Emma, know as Emma or Emmie, was born on 10th Apr 1858 in Birmingham to William Holmes and Caroline (née Whateley). She was christened 17th May 1858 in St Martin’s Birmingham. She attended the Bluecoat school in Birmingham.
She married George William Edwards, son of the preacher of a small chapel in Worcester, in 6th Jul 1876 at St John the Baptist, Claines, Worcestershire. George was a gilder in 1871, and a brushmaker at the time of his marriage and after.
Emma had grown up in Worcester, but at the time of her marriage was living in Claines, Worcestershire, and their first two children were born there. In 1881 they were living in Swansea, and her third son Frederick was born there, but they were back in Worcester by the birth of Richard in 1885, subsequently they were in Worcester in 1891 and 1901. George was working in Staffordshire in 1891, and not at home in 1901. This followed a similar pattern to his father, who also apparently spent time away from home. Emma worked as a ‘needlewoman shirt’, and a gloveress. I previously thought George died in Jan qtr 1907 in St Pancras, London, but Caroline Emma’s obituary suggested that George died in 1931. I have found no trace of him in Canada, and his is not buried with Emma, see below. I have also proved the 1907 burial to be a different person.
I have known for some time that Emma emigrated to Winnipeg in Canada. I had often assumed she emigrated at the same time as her daughter. However she emigrated alone from Bristol on 6th June 1912, arriving at Montreal and Quebec on 19th June. She travelled on the Royal George of the Canadian Northern Steamship Ltd, and is stated to be a widow.
In 1922, she was living at Suite 36 St John’s Block, 981 1/2 Main, Winnipeg. In 1935 she was at 562 Balmoral, and in 1936 at 367 Balmoral with Mrs Miriam Bagott. Caroline died on the 4th September 1937 at 628 Garfield Street, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was buried at Old Kildonan Cemetery.
